Vlamingh Head Lighthouse

Wind moves steadily across the headland, lifting through dry grass and carrying salt from the ocean below. The lighthouse stands pale against a wide, open sky, its walls catching hard light while the sea shifts between deep blue and clear turquoise along the reef. From this height, the horizon feels endless. The sound of surf rises faint but constant, breaking far beneath the cliff line. As evening settles, people gather quietly along the ridge, watching the sky deepen and the sun fall back into the water.

Vlamingh Head sits above the coastline near Exmouth in Western Australia. It is one of the rare locations where both sunrise and sunset can be seen over the ocean from the same vantage point. Though no longer a functioning lighthouse, it remains a landmark for visitors drawn to its history, expansive views, distant offshore rigs resting low on the horizon, and, in season, the sight of whales moving beyond the reef.

This painting was chosen as a birthday surprise, gifted by a husband to his wife. There’s something special about knowing the work will mark a personal celebration and become part of their home. I hope it continues to hold that memory each time it’s seen.
