Listening to the Land

A stunted gum stands alone in iron-rich soil, its pale trunk set against the layered red walls of the gorge. Bands of ancient rock are cut through with pale fibrous seams, tracing mineral lines across the exposed strata. Below the rim, green water rests in shadow, edged by stone worn smooth over millennia. The air feels still and heavy beneath the open Pilbara sky, where heat settles into rock and scrub without movement. Near Fern Pool in Karijini, the land reveals its age through exposed layers and quiet, enduring presence.

Karijini lies within the traditional lands of the Banyjima, Kurrama and Innawonga peoples, whose relationship with this country extends far beyond recorded history. The gorges and waterholes remain places of deep cultural significance, where stories, law and connection to land are held within the rock formations and flowing water.
